Here, as every year, a quick update on ESSE matters before the festive season starts in many parts of the ESSE world.

 

ESSE Conferences

This year, we enjoyed a wonderful and successful ESSE Conference in Lausanne. Thanks again to Anita Auer and her team for all the work that they put into making this such an enjoyable and memorable conference. And now, we are already looking forward to the next ESSE Conference, which will take place at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 31 August to 4 September 2026. Preparations are well under way. The website is already online, and the call for seminars, round tables and parallel lectures is ready to be posted in the next few days (https://www.esse2026.com/en/index.php). Please, make sure to inform the members of your associations in good time so that they can prepare their proposals.

 

Board Meeting and Doctoral Symposium

Please, save the dates. As previously announced the Board Meeting will take place on 5/6 September 2025, in Malta, where Ivan Callus, our board member representing the Maltese association (ASEM), will be our host. The meeting will be preceded by a Doctoral Symposium, which will again be organised by Lachlan Mackenzie. It will take place on 3/4 September. As usual, the board meeting will start with an informal get-together on the evening before the meeting (i.e. on 4 September), and the Extended Executive will have a meeting in the afternoon of 4 September.

 

Elections

As you know, at the meeting in Malta, the board will have to elect a new ESSE Secretary and a new ESSE Treasurer. The term of office for both posts will begin on 1 January 2026. The call for applications has been published on the ESSE website: https://essenglish.org/esse-announcements/. The deadline for applications is 30 April 2025.

Goodbye and welcome, a personal word from the president

After six years, my term of office as President of ESSE is coming to an end at the end of this year. It has been an incredible honour and privilege to serve in this role, and I want to thank you all for your unfailing support and cooperation throughout this time. A particularly warm and heartfelt word of thanks goes to my co-members of the Executive, first Smiljana Komar and Alberto Lázaro, and, since the second year of my two terms of office, Biljana Mišić Ilić and Gašper Ilc. They have all made my six years in office a pleasure and thoroughly enjoyable, and without them I would not have been able to do it.

Lieven Buysse, who was elected as my successor and ESSE’s seventh president, will start his term of office in the new year, and I hope he will find the task as enjoyable as it has been for me. At the beginning of December, we had a handover meeting in Ljubljana (see picture above) together with Gašper and Biljana to make sure that the transition is as smooth as possible.

 

Distribution list and email address

As one immediate consequence of the handover, there will be a switch to a new distribution list. The list from which you are receiving this message has been hosted at the University of Zurich. It will be discontinued at the end of the year, but the new list hosted at the KU Leuven is ready, and Lieven will activate it before the end of the year.

And please note that the presidential email address remains unchanged, i.e. esse.president@outlook.com. The incoming president already has access to it, and the outgoing president will switch off his access at the end of the year. He can still be reached via his institutional address (ahjucker@es.uzh.ch).

It is a great pleasure for us to announce that Assist. Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Demir, our member from Munzur University, received "ESSE Bursary for Research Trips 2023" with her project entitled "The Role of English Poet Laureates in Shaping Public Perception towards Scotland." 

​

We congratulate her with all our good wishes. We hope more of our members will qualify for ESSE Awards and Bursaries.

In the Members Assembly, the closing session of the 15th International IDEA Conference organised by Hatay Mustafa Kemal University between May 11-13, 2022, it was decided that a Gender Studies Network (GSN) be established within our association. In the period following the Conference, a working group was formed among the members willing to take part in the GSN and this group held its first meeting online on June 24, 2022, with a large attendance.  
In the meeting, where Prof. Işıl Baş, the President of IDEA, informed the participants about the activities of ESSE Gender Studies Network, a productive exchange of ideas was made about what the GSN could accomplish in the future and several important subjects were discussed. (Click here for a summary of the meeting.) In the second meeting, the working group will further elaborate on the goals of the IDEA GSN and how they can be ordered within a timeframe.

11-13 Mayıs 2022 tarihleri arasında Hatay Mustafa Kemal Üniversitesi tarafından düzenlenen 15. Uluslararası IDEA Konferansı’nın kapanış oturumu olan Üyeler Toplantısı’nda derneğimiz bünyesinde bir “Gender Studies Network” (GSN) kurulması kararlaştırılmıştı. Konferansı takip eden dönemde GSN’de yer almak isteyen üyelerimizden bir çalışma grubu oluşturuldu ve bu topluluk ilk toplantısını 24 Haziran 2022 tarihinde geniş bir katılımla çevrimiçi olarak gerçekleştirdi. 

IDEA Başkanı Prof. Dr. Işıl Baş’ın da “ESSE Gender Studies Network”ün faaliyetleri hakkında bilgi verdiği toplantıda GSN’nin gelecek dönemde hayata geçirebileceği çalışmalara dair verimli tartışmalar yapıldı ve bir dizi önemli konu üzerinde duruldu. (Toplantının kısa bir özeti için tıklayınız.) İkinci toplantıda da GSN’nin hedefleri ve bu hedeflerin nasıl bir zaman çerçevesine oturtulabileceği konuları görüşülmeye devam edecektir.

This structure will function as a communication network composed of English Language and Literature academics who work on or are interested in thinking about gender and gender-related issues. Gender Studies Network will also develop mechanisms to enable IDEA members to include gender dimensions in their department curricula, course syllabi and/or research projects. It will also facilitate sharing positive experiences and good practices in this area.

We invite all interested IDEA members to participate in the forming of this network and in the process of designing its subsequent activities.

IDEA olarak üyelerimiz arasında bir Toplumsal Cinsiyet Çalışmaları Ağı kurmak istiyoruz. Bu yapı, toplumsal cinsiyet ve onunla ilişkili konular üzerine çalışan ya da bu konulara ilgi duyan İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı akademisyenlerinin oluşturduğu bir iletişim ağı işlevi görecektir. Toplumsal Cinsiyet Çalışmaları Ağı ayrıca IDEA üyesi araştırmacıların mensup oldukları bölüm müfredatlarına, ders programlarına ve/veya araştırma projelerine toplumsal cinsiyet boyutunu dâhil etmeleri için çalışmalar yapacak, bu konudaki olumlu deneyimlerin ve iyi uygulamaların paylaşılmasını sağlayacaktır.

Bu ağın kuruluşunda yer almak ve sonraki faaliyetlerinin tasarlanması sürecine katılmak isteyen tüm IDEA üyelerini bizimle irtibata geçmeye davet ediyoruz.
